racism Act 2

Othello actually is responsible for some racism in Act two. He asks his men if they are turned Turks meaning Turkish people who are different then the way they are. Not white not black, but in between and a lot of people don’t like the Turks because they cause trouble. Othello has said yet if he is offended by all the racism but he certainly gives it right back in his own ways. Maybe he doesn’t even mean to do it, which half the time most people don’t. But in this time period and in this play everyone has racism and everyone clearly states their opinion. Iago is still working on his plan to get back at Othello for sleeping with his wife and I think getting back at him also has to do with racism and him being good at what he does. He says at one point something about the lusty moor. Iago is using Desdemona to help get what he wants and he gets pretty close with her at one point. What I think he is really saying is that he too loves Desdemona not out of lust but out of revenge to get back at the moor for sleeping with his wife or so he thinks Othello slept with his wife. Iago also runs into two men from Cyprus who wants to drink to the health of black Othello. They are being racist here because they are drinking to him because he is black and because he is in bed with white women.

I still don’t like Iago at all. I think he lies and he manipulates everyone in this play. It’s pretty clever how he gets Cassio fired though. I will admit that it isn't nice but it is also sweet how it works out. I feel bad for Cassio that he trusts Iago and Iago is just stabbing him in the back by trying to get him fired and get Desdemona and Othello to break up. It’s nice that Othello gives the men a feast when they get to the island and all the Turks are dead because of the storm. I'm wondering if Desdemona and Othello’s relationship is going to work because of everything that is going on. If Othello doesn’t trust Desdemona then things could get ugly. But Desdemona made it pretty clear towards the end of the act that she was all for Othello and wouldn’t cheat on him. If Iago's plan did happen to work then Othello would also get mad at Desdemona and possibly cause a fight between Othello and Desdemona. It's hard to tell if Cassio actually likes Desdemona or if he is just being friendly by holding her hand and talking to her while she waits for Othello to arrive. It would certainly be interesting if Desdemona and Cassio started to have a thing. But if anyone in this story were to get with Desdemona I think it would be Iago because he would manipulate everyone to not like her anymore and he would take her from all of them.

racism

By now we all know that Othello is not white he is black. In this time period racism was huge. Everyone made fun of Othello or called him names like Moor. In today’s world most colored people take this very offensively. I think it’s very disappointing that Brabantio judges Othello by saying he can’t marry his daughter before he even gets to know him. But the funny thing is apparently Brabantio talked to Othello and Othello met Desdemona through Brabantio. Desdemona says she fell in love with Othello through the stories her father had told Othello to tell her. So why is it such a big deal to Brabantio if he knows that Othello is a good person? He turned his back on Othello race as soon as he married his daughter because I don’t think he wanted everyone else to know that he thought it was okay. That’s just my opinion. Also Iago says many times that he hates the Moor. He doesn’t exactly say why until the end of the act why. But I can’t tell if he hates Othello because he’s black or because he thinks he slept with his wife. I guess we’ll figure out. I hope that Othello doesn’t take it personally that just because of the color of his skin people don’t like him or won’t accept that he married Desdemona. I couldn’t believe that Brabantio was against Roderigo and for Roderigo after Othello married his daughter. But after she marries a black person Brabantio doesn’t even care anymore.

I think that this play is hard to understand so far and slow moving. I am not a big fan of Iago because I think he is very two faced and not trustworthy. I can't believe he just left Roderigo in Brabantio's back yard and ran off. He also tries to take money from Roderigo because he knows that he will give it to him. I think it was very wrong that Desdemona and Othello ran off to get married especially since she didn’t have permission from her father before. But I think it was very two faced that Brabantio would talk to Othello and liked him before Othello married his daughter. Brabantio also hated Roderigo before his daughter was married and said that she would never marry him. But now Brabantio doesn't think Roderigo is that bad and thinks he’s better then Othello. Im interested to see if they go to the right island to stop the ships from invading and what happens with that whole situation. It surprises me how Brabantio says he is okay with his daughter being married when he really isn’t. I’m not sure why Desdemona would want to go to the war with Othello. I mean I know they just got married but they will be together for the resdt of their lives. At least that’s what they promised each other and I think they could wait like and do what they need to later on. Desdemona is risking her life and it surprises me that Othello is willing to let her do that.
